K and I were asked...

...to run the masquerade at BayCon 2007. After a lot of agonizing over the space (which isn't ideal, but is better than it was back when K ran an ORAC masquerade in the 80s) and many other things, we decided that the best answer was "Yes."

It's going to be a bit of workload I don't think either of us really wanted to add, but it will be valuable to Costume-Con 26 for us to run BayCon's masquerade the year before our con.

I can tell y'all already that it's not going to be fancy staging. The ballroom isn't big, and it's got low ceilings so it can't support a riser stage. We've got a good green-room location, I think a good official photo location and a good fan-photo location (once the line subsides, assuming it's not being used to set out catering). Traffic paths are manageable, I hope.

We're looking for entries. If you're going to BayCon, think about entering.

We're looking for volunteers. If you're going to BayCon and are interested in helping with the masquerade, let us know.

I'll be entering, and several other people have told me they're entering as well. :)

I dropped a note to Johanna presenting the possiblity of doing "Pancho's" again on Friday at BayCon. We're going to have to move Evil Geniuses to Sunday if we're running masq.

And I CC'd Radar on the reply. I don't see why we can't do the party again. It was quite the hit, and our budget should be a bit easier, this time - nor do I think we'll have nearly as much booze left over! ;)

Though now that you're in charge, we could revisit the concept of shifting the Masquerade to Sunday...

Christine and I talked about that on Sunday. Big no. I say that from both sides of the aisle.

Hilary mentioned the idea that Sunday would give people more chance to register, but I haven't seen that be a reality.

Baycon is a 4-day con, and while it's not Worldcon scale its duration definitely shifts the feel away from the smaller 3-day events. We've done Worldcons where masquerade and Hugos are switched. It's really sucked for both the entrants and the staff. Masq is a high-stress thing for many entrants, and with a real 4-day con, eating up 3 with masq prep doesn't give them any time to relax.

Okay. I know that we'd discussed it before and had come up with both good and bad points to the swap, but I also know that it's not my particular field of obsession interest. I'm just happy that it's been discussed.

I'll volunteer to be a grunt or whatever you think I can help with. It should be glorious fun. I've not done anything really like it before, but I can tell photographers to get out of the way, tell contestants to "walk this way" or whatever.

Use me and abuse me.

I'm going to a different con over Memorial Day wknd, but if you end up doing WesterCon's masquerade as well, I'm happy to lend a hand there.

If I'm not entering (although I'm 60% certain that I will be) I'd be happy to help y'all with the Masquerade.

Great news! I'll definitely lend a hand if you need non-costumer help.
