note to self...

that "compact folders" option in the file menu of Mozilla Thunderbird is important when you're using IMAP. Run it at least once a month...

I've been religiously compacting my folders, but I don't understand why it's necessary. Can you please explain?

They bloat.

My local IMAP folders had bloated up to 1.6mb, even though there's less than 100mb of actual messages.

Oh, and the reason they bloat is when you delete a mail item, it's just marked as deleted rather than removed from the mail file until you compact the folder. Then it actually gets pruned away.
